Hello people, he will be SCCO's new CONDUCTOR, as well as STRINGS INSTRUCTOR. So read on to know more about him!

Low Cher Yong,LLCM Music Director / Conductor

Low Cher Yong was born in a family of music talents. He is a young homegrown huqin performer cum percussionist. He started learning Western percussion when he was in primary school and was the sectional leader of the school’s military band. He also started learning the electronic organ at the same time.

He graduated from Broadrick Secondary School and first come into contact with Chinese music during his secondary school days. He was the chairperson as well as the concert master of Broadrick Secondary School Chinese Orchestra. In the 1991 Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) central judging, he was the Banhu soloist and brought the school to win its distinction award. Being an active member of the community, he participated in many amateur Chinese Orchestras, including, Kampong Chai Chee Chinese Orchestra, People’s Association Youth Chinese Orchestra, NTUC Chinese Orchestra etc. He was the soloist for many of the concerts. He was on several occasions invited to perform with the then People’s Association Chinese Orchestra.

In 1992, he won the second prize at the National Chinese Music Competition Youth Category. Low performed in Australia as a Concert Master with the Singapore Armed Forces Chinese Orchestra during his national service. He has also performed in London, Hungary, China, Macau, Taiwan and Malaysia.

After he graduated from secondary school, he began teaching in various primary and secondary schools, junior colleges and music centres. In recent years, he has achieved good results. In 2001, 2003 and 2005, he brought River Valley High School Chinese Orchestra to three consecutive gold medals in the SYF Central Judging. In 2007, he brought Marsiling Secondary School and Woodgrove Secondary School Chinese Orchestras to another 2 Gold Medals. In the same year, he attained 3 more gold awards for Woodgrove Secondary School and Marsiling Chinese Orchestra in the 21st Century International Arts Festival at Genting Highlands, West Malaysia. In addition, he brought back another Gold medal for Nanyang Primary School Chinese Orchestra in the SYF Central Judging 2008. Once again in 2009, he brought another 2 gold medals to Marsiling and Woodgrove Secondary School, his 2 neighbourhood schools Chinese Orchestra! Moreover, he is the first conductor to bring a Secondary School Chinese Orchestra to perform in the Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay. In 2004, he has been invited to set up Marsiling Chinese Orchestra, under the initiation of Mr Hawazi, MP for Sembawang GRC ( Marsiling ). It is a collaboration program between Marsiling Citizens’ Consultative Committee ( CCC ) and Marsiling Secondary School. He has also conducted 10 full house concerts for River Valley High School Chinese Orchestra, Woodgrove Secondary School Chinese Orchestra, Marsiling Secondary School Chinese Orchestra, Marsiling Chinese Orchestra and Saint Andrew’s Junior College Chinese Orchestra. He has leaded his Orchestras to perform for numerous functions, charity events and Overseas Music Exchanges.

He joined the Singapore Chinese Orchestra in 1997 and has played various bow-string instruments and percussion. The promising Low is currently the Gaohu musician in SCO and the Gaohu/Zhonghu instructor for Singapore Youth Chinese Orchestra. Since 2004, when he is promoted to SCO Conducting Assistant and Assistant Conductor for SYCO, he has been receiving Conducting Skills training from SCO Music Director, Mr Tsung Yeh. In the same year, he has also been selected as one of the conductors who conduct SCO National Day Concert at Singapore Indoor Stadium, the largest Chinese Orchestra performance ever. Since the Launch of Caring Series by him on Mar 2004, he has conducted numerous SCO performances at various hospitals. He has also been invited to attend the Conductor Workshop organized by SCO in 2006.

Presently, he is the Conductor cum strings and percussion instructor for Primary/Secondary Schools/Junior College and Community Club Chinese Orchestras. He has learned from many teachers like Mr Zhang Yu Min. He has also learned piano and music theory from Law Wai Lun and theory from Phoon Yew Tien. He is also the holder of Academic British Royal School of Music Grade 5 distinction certificate and a Yamaha Electone Grade 6 organ certificate. He was awarded the Licentiate in Conducting (LLCM) Distinction from the London College of Music, Thames Valley University in year 2008.

On 15th March 2007, he has been invited by the North West Grassroots Cluster (People’s Association) as a Grassroot Leader, to perform a presentation on “Making Friends through Music”, for their Community Engagement Workshop 2007 at Ulu Pandan Community Club.

Low Cher Yong’s immense and significant contributions towards the local neighbourhood schools’ Chinese Orchestra developments have not gone unnoticed. Having ignited many students’ passion for music and developed their talents, Low was appointed as the Artistic Director of Ace 99 Cultural Pte Ltd in May 2009. Low is now poised to bring local schools’ Chinese Orchestra to the international stage. Under his nurturing and dynamic leadership, the Chinese Orchestra will no longer be just a mere Co-Curricular Activity in schools, but a musical renaissance. This is Low’s challenge, mission and calling.

On 2nd September 2009, he set up ProMusic.
