Hello people, he will be SCCO's new CONDUCTOR, as well as STRINGS INSTRUCTOR. So read on to know more about him!

Low Cher Yong，LLCM Music Director / Conductor

Low Cher Yong was born in a family of music talents. He is a young homegrown huqin performer cum percussionist. He started learning Western percussion when he was in primary school and was the sectional leader of the school’s military band. He also started learning the electronic organ at the same time.

He graduated from Broadrick Secondary School and first come into contact with Chinese music during his secondary school days. He was the chairperson as well as the concert master of Broadrick Secondary School Chinese Orchestra. In the 1991 Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) central judging, he was the Banhu soloist and brought the school to win its distinction award. Being an active member of the community, he participated in many amateur Chinese Orchestras, including, Kampong Chai Chee Chinese Orchestra, People’s Association Youth Chinese Orchestra, NTUC Chinese Orchestra etc. He was the soloist for many of the concerts. He was on several occasions invited to perform with the then People’s Association Chinese Orchestra.

In 1992, he won the second prize at the National Chinese Music Competition Youth Category. Low performed in Australia as a Concert Master with the Singapore Armed Forces Chinese Orchestra during his national service. He has also performed in London, Hungary, China, Macau, Taiwan and Malaysia.

After he graduated from secondary school, he began teaching in various primary and secondary schools, junior colleges and music centres. In recent years, he has achieved good results. In 2001, 2003 and 2005, he brought River Valley High School Chinese Orchestra to three consecutive gold medals in the SYF Central Judging. In 2007, he brought Marsiling Secondary School and Woodgrove Secondary School Chinese Orchestras to another 2 Gold Medals. In the same year, he attained 3 more gold awards for Woodgrove Secondary School and Marsiling Chinese Orchestra in the 21st Century International Arts Festival at Genting Highlands, West Malaysia. In addition, he brought back another Gold medal for Nanyang Primary School Chinese Orchestra in the SYF Central Judging 2008. Once again in 2009, he brought another 2 gold medals to Marsiling and Woodgrove Secondary School, his 2 neighbourhood schools Chinese Orchestra! Moreover, he is the first conductor to bring a Secondary School Chinese Orchestra to perform in the Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay. In 2004, he has been invited to set up Marsiling Chinese Orchestra, under the initiation of Mr Hawazi, MP for Sembawang GRC ( Marsiling ). It is a collaboration program between Marsiling Citizens’ Consultative Committee ( CCC ) and Marsiling Secondary School. He has also conducted 10 full house concerts for River Valley High School Chinese Orchestra, Woodgrove Secondary School Chinese Orchestra, Marsiling Secondary School Chinese Orchestra, Marsiling Chinese Orchestra and Saint Andrew’s Junior College Chinese Orchestra. He has leaded his Orchestras to perform for numerous functions, charity events and Overseas Music Exchanges.

He joined the Singapore Chinese Orchestra in 1997 and has played various bow-string instruments and percussion. The promising Low is currently the Gaohu musician in SCO and the Gaohu/Zhonghu instructor for Singapore Youth Chinese Orchestra. Since 2004, when he is promoted to SCO Conducting Assistant and Assistant Conductor for SYCO, he has been receiving Conducting Skills training from SCO Music Director, Mr Tsung Yeh. In the same year, he has also been selected as one of the conductors who conduct SCO National Day Concert at Singapore Indoor Stadium, the largest Chinese Orchestra performance ever. Since the Launch of Caring Series by him on Mar 2004, he has conducted numerous SCO performances at various hospitals. He has also been invited to attend the Conductor Workshop organized by SCO in 2006.

Presently, he is the Conductor cum strings and percussion instructor for Primary/Secondary Schools/Junior College and Community Club Chinese Orchestras. He has learned from many teachers like Mr Zhang Yu Min. He has also learned piano and music theory from Law Wai Lun and theory from Phoon Yew Tien. He is also the holder of Academic British Royal School of Music Grade 5 distinction certificate and a Yamaha Electone Grade 6 organ certificate. He was awarded the Licentiate in Conducting (LLCM) Distinction from the London College of Music, Thames Valley University in year 2008.

On 15th March 2007, he has been invited by the North West Grassroots Cluster (People’s Association) as a Grassroot Leader, to perform a presentation on “Making Friends through Music”, for their Community Engagement Workshop 2007 at Ulu Pandan Community Club.

Low Cher Yong’s immense and significant contributions towards the local neighbourhood schools’ Chinese Orchestra developments have not gone unnoticed. Having ignited many students’ passion for music and developed their talents, Low was appointed as the Artistic Director of Ace 99 Cultural Pte Ltd in May 2009. Low is now poised to bring local schools’ Chinese Orchestra to the international stage. Under his nurturing and dynamic leadership, the Chinese Orchestra will no longer be just a mere Co-Curricular Activity in schools, but a musical renaissance. This is Low’s challenge, mission and calling.

On 2nd September 2009, he set up ProMusic.

HELLO PEOPLE.

4 more weeks or so to concert. So fast right?!

So better work harder hor, although i know most of them wun. But anyway, still hope that for the last 4 weeks, just put in more effort and make the concert a great success! We can do it alright? Especially for the sec 4 graduating seniors! It's your last performance as a member of swiss cottage chinese orchestra! After 4 years of hard work in CO, you're finally approaching the end (can be happy or sad lah)!!! Last performance already, so the more you should work hard to make it the best one! JUNIORS!!! Last performance with your sec 4 seniors, make it the last yet the best and memorable one okay? :D

Must bring out our gold standard on the stage once again! It may be different because my batch (o9 graduates) are not there anymore. Ehh, but i'll still be there! :D Haha, but it's impossible for all of us to be on stage. Hmm, there are alumnis performing as well!

No matter what, when you're on stage, just believe that you can do it! :D Have confidence in yourself! 4 more weeks, it'll be here soon.

Now it's the crucial period already. Should start to take note of little details, like how you present yourself on stage. Maybe some of you will say that "aiya all these things last minute then do also can", but i think that it's better to start early so that you'll get used to it! Like your sitting posture, etc etc. It's very important okay!!!! Be more serious during practices! We don't have much time left seriously. TO THOSE PEOPLE WHO WILL PON CO PRACTICE (don't think i don't know arh! :P), IT'S TIME TO STOP PONNING! LAST FOUR WEEKS LE LAH, BE GOOD BOY/GIRL AND GO FOR EVERY PRACT. DON'T MISS ANY OF THEM!

Alright, school started for most of your already. Ahh, stress right? Especially for... All of you actually. For people who are going to JC, school will start on THURSDAY for us. Aww, sad. Our holidays are finally over. Now must face stress again.

Apart from schoolwork, stress is also coming from CO right? Hahaha. All of you MUST practise hard for concert hor. This is our first concert after we got our GOLD medal last year, hence it's really important that we show the public that we got gold not just because of pure luck, but because we are that good. Okay??? :DDDD

3) All SYF performers! (Including 4E/N/5N) You guys are required to come back for practice on 5 June (Friday) for the Arts Nite which is also on the day itself (5th June) It's complusory. C: The performance is open for parents & alumnis.

There will be a performance called the Arts Nite on 5th June 2009 (friday).

To my dear strings:

Today didn't get a chance to speak to you people.

First of all, i'm really proud to be the SL of this super uber impressive section. We were once the weakest section in SCCO, getting criticised. Miss Lim even made a nasty remark that if SCCO cannot get gold, strings have the biggest responsiblity. Hearing all those really made my heart sank. I feel very sad, for being not able to help much.

On 20 april 2009, we made everyone impressed. In such a short period of time, we improved so much. Like what Miss Lim said, we were IMPRESSIVE. Yes, we definitely are. Credit goes to everyone, because we didn't give up. Instead all of us worked even harder, right? [Can't stop listening to the recording. We simply rocks!]

I AM PROUD TO BE THE SL OF THIS IMPRESSIVE SECTION.

Thank you all my dear strings members for making me proud of you. Without you people, all these will not happen.

For the past one year, i won't say that i have been performing my duties excellently, because i clearly know that i didn't. I'm really apologetic if i did anything wrong or nasty to anyone of you. But, the past one year had really been enjoyable for me. The fact that i have such a nice section, with so many nice people. Getting the GOLD medal as my step down present, i have no regrets. Being SL of strings also made me realised a lot of things, things that i will not realise if i had never become the SL of strings. Seriously, i will miss being the SL of strings. Most importantly, i will miss my dearest strings section, which consist of a bunch of nice people. With strings, my life would be totally different, & colourless.

From the moment onwards, i'm not the SL anymore. But no matter what, will be supporting Swiss Strings mentally. I can't promise that i will go back often, but as much as i can.

From today onwards, must listen to ASLs. (: Respect them & don't make things difficult for them!

After SA1, there will not be any sec4/5 seniors around in strings, you juniors just need to depend on yourself. However, i trust every single one of you. (: We will be forever impressive right?

虽然我不在了但是大家还是要好好的努力。希望有朝一日当我踏进华乐室的时候会让我听到一致的弦乐，深情的弦乐。我相信大家一定行的，因为我们拿到金牌了！不要忘了我们年底还要到槟城去的！

3 more days to SYF!!!!!!!! :DD
Yes, that means we are nearer to our GOLD!

It had been really tiring for many of us... Right? Especially the sec 4 and 5, busy coping with lessons, tests, remedials & so on. I'm also very tired as well.

Remember few weeks ago, our SYF rehearsal. Many of us cried, because we are criticize until like shit, we made many people disappointed, and we are disappointed with ourselves. Although some people might appear that they don't care, but actually deep in their heart they do feel something as well. Although i can't say that strings is a united section, but it's really happy to see all of us working extra harder after that. So what if we are the weakest section? We didn't give up. Extra practices were tiring. But we still went through them. Words are hurting, but we still need to accept them.

Now, just 3 more days to SYF. We are still having practice despite that we are just 3 weeks away from mid-year examinations. Many may be complaining, grumbling why the hell am i here when i should be studying? (sometimes i feel like that too!) We grumbled, but still, we come for practices! Hahahaa. Months ago people complain its tiring, but still months later, we are still complaining. But it's going to end soon. Times flies.

Another person i think all of us should thank personally is Mr Cheng! Regardless of gold or not, we ought to thank him. Although he's drawing high salary (but it's considered low compared to market rate!) whenever he come, but you know how tough is that for him to travel all the way from east area to here???? Mr Cheng is actually a super busy man, but he still agreed to teach us. We should be thankful. This is the first time of my four years in CO we have a instructor going through SYF with us. During practices, i really feel very 幸福when Mr Cheng is there for us. You know normally its like see other section got instructors there for them, but strings are always alone. So, JUNIORS! Please please please, cherish our instructor ok? No matter what, don't let him leave us! [:

We thank Mr Cheng, of course cannot forget Mr Lee! Our conductor is really nice! :DD He made the effort to have sectionals with us, although he's not strings instructor. He helped us a lot. (:

Yupps, also Miss Lim. Hahahahahha. Don't know if you guys got see it or not, she actually care a lot for us.

3 days later, no matter what is the result... We thank those who we should thank ok?? No matter what, Swiss Strings is the best, Swiss CO is the best.

After sec 4/5 seniors step down, it's time for sec 3 to take over. Work hard for the concert next year, & SYF on the following year. Make Swiss Strings the best, & SWISS CO THE BEST OF THE BEST!

Okay, i hope everyone had fun yesterday. No injuries right? xD

SYF coming in just ten days, take care of your health! :DD

Oh anyway, hello jingshi!! Haha. SPCO concert sounds appealing, but sadly most of us can't go because our exams starts on 4 may... But anyway, anybody who can make it should go because spco is a nice CO! :D & of course, got MR LEE!! By the way, the rule of watching at least 2 concert a year is somehow still on. Haha.

Yupps, exams are approaching soon. Those who are not involved in SYF please please please make use of time to STUDY & PRACTISE. After exams please do not come back with NOTHING, make sure you make some improvements over the few weeks!

SYF in 10 more days. Very scary right??? D: Anyway, i hope everyone read the card the sec 1 wrote for us. In case you didn't, please get it from me. It's really sweet of them to make that card for us.

This blog is really dead. Only can see the little sec 1s at the tagboard. What happened to seniors?? Haha, must be busy studying, practising, slacking, sleeping, stoning, whatevering.

Hello people! I guess most of you dunno me. i graduated in 2006. was a zhonghurian anw.

so im here to promote Singapore Polytechic Chinese Orchestra Concert 2009 on 8 May 2009, Friday, 8pm at SCH.
SPCO is under the baton of Mr Lee too!

During my time, there was a "rule" that every member has to watch at least two concerts in a year. So if the "rule" is still on, y not consider this concert?

Though its after your SYF, but we're also playing jiang jun ling. There are also lots of nice songs!

I realised that i have been posting for the past few post. It's boring to read the post from me only right? So! More people must post here! :D A few sec 1 already accepted the request so they should post here also!

Another thing i noticed is that: *shocked* the rate people are tagging at our tagboard.
WOW. Sec 1 are really very active in terms of tagging. Good job! (:

Strings is really getting better & better! Got praised by teacher for having taifeng, although i'm still not very satisfied with our taifeng... One day ALL of you must go & watch SCO's concert then you'll know what is taifeng.

Seriously, i think strings will look uber cute on stage BECAUSE OF OUR TAIFENG xD

Try to make it look more naturally, 'cos nobody's taifeng is natural now, including me. Tips: Go search for videos @ http://youtube.com/ . Some videos have great taifeng.

Another thing is that those parts i went through today. WE MUST BE SYNCHRONISED! And also, don't produce the sound when we keep our bows.

Oh anyway, sorry for not updating this blog for so long! Because i was really busy with school work. Haha, now got a little time to relax & enjoy.

CO practice quite nothing special actually, still a long distance away from GOLD. But i think at least we did improve. Claps!!

One big news is that.....
WE GOT JUNIORS =.=
MALE JUNIORS!!!!!!! [:
haha, that's the big news.

We got 13 juniors, just because there are 13 graduating seniors =.= I know that is a lot, but we just have to make do with it :D We got 11 females & 2 males. Fially right?? After two batch without male. Haha, all the seniors were happy not because we are despo for guys (or maybe we are because we need guys in strings!!)

Wanying, Ruiying, Eunice, Qianyin, Huiyi, Yunzhen, Raine, Liching, Chengwee, Bill, Euna, Guallin & Dawn!!! [ Yeah! I remember all the names, but haven't match the names to their face.)

We got one korean!! Haha, her name is Euna. She's very sweet, but bad thing is that she don't understand chinese! ): I'm supposed to speak english to her, but i think my english is very broken =X Haha.

The two guys, hmm not bad. Haha. Quite nice.

In conclusion, i think that our juniors are really very cute & nice. I love them a lot! :D They are very active, but not to the extent of naughty. I see great potential in them, hence i can step down peacefully! However, the problem is that they are still so young now, nobody knows what will happen a few years later. Haha, maybe by then they become not cute. (just kidding!)
[I feel that i'm writing conclusion for SEQ. Because i wrote too many SEQs recently.]

Some updates of the camp.
After a long day of practise on DAY ONE, strings really improve tremendously(?). Haha. I think credits goes to all of us, especially Mr Cheng! This is really first time he zoom into the details. Cheers for strings. (:

& on Day 2, after the sectionals taken by Zaiyuan, we improve as well. Finally, a nice full orchestra! Although it's still not near to perfect, but i'm sure as long as we continue to work harder, we can do it! Not to forget, the treasure hunt! Strings won number one! [: Thanks people who ran w/ us, 'cos if we didn't run so fast, we wouldn't had won. Haha. & from it, i can really sense the bond between us. [: It's getting stronger!

Day 3, although all of us were tired, but we still tried our best to give the best. Full orchestra, first time ever i see most of us trying to have taifeng. It's a rare sight. Haha! Continue working hard! Miss lim praised us today, & this is really what we deserved right?

If this goes on, we'll sure get our GOLD MEDAL. Sec 3'o8 can step down happily! Besides that, we also fulfilled our seniors' dream! (:

Here are some updates:

CO camp on 18-20 Dec.

I hope that ALL our dear seniors will come back. I heard that we are having food from the western food stall. This year is a BIG difference from previous years camp, because FINALLY, we got an instructor to guide us for sectionals during camp. But i think Mr Cheng say that he's not free on one day. I hope that he will at least come for a day, 'cos for the past 2 years in CO, we never had any "real" instructor for ITC.

Performance @ Expo on o7 Dec'o8

Yeah, this is a small group performance. But some good thing is that the songs we are playing are NEW! Not those same old songs anymore... Haha. I'm not very sure with the details yet. (:

Extra Practice on break week (24 Dec- 30 Dec)
Although it's BREAK, but a lot people are missing practices outside off the break week due to travelling overseas plan. Hence, i have decided that we MUST have extra practice on that week. I think it's only for SELECTED people. Details still not confirmed yet. Will announce it during CO once i confirmed.

Strings got another instructor, for our so-called enrichment for sec 1 & 2. She's 赵丽 from SCO, gaohu. She's the one with hairband. I feel that she's nice, friendly as well.

We got our SYF set piece, 蝉歌 (Song of Cicada). It's D diao. I seen through the gaohu scores. Quite easy, except for the second page got almost half a page of double notes. It's really ONE WHOLE CHUNK.

Gaohu got two page, erhu got two. Zhonghu i never see. Either two or three bah. [;

I think we will get the printed scores latest by next saturday??

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE. One step nearer to our GOLD! :D (actually still quite far)

Our project theme is beauty is only skin deep, and we hop to change the perceptions of young girls towards real beauty!
